Is RISC OS Open Source?
It was initially developed to run the 32-bit Arm processor family and was built using assembly language. RISC OS is open sourced and available under the Apache 2.0 licence — it was one of the first operating systems to support the Raspberry Pi.
Is RISC OS Dead?
As of March 2017, the OS remains forked and is independently developed by RISCOS Ltd and the RISC OS Open community.

How do I start RISC OS?
Start Raspberry Pi Imager, click on “Choose OS” and select “RISC OS”. If more than one RISC OS version is offered, select “RISC OS 5.28”. Click on “Choose SD card” and select the device to use. An SD card of at least 2GB is required (if you use a larger card, RISC OS will only be able to use the first 2GB).
